Synopsis

Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once word reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened as his parents head to New York to annul the marriage. Mikey Madison reflects on the roles that shaped his path to Better Things’ Anora; at Once Upon a Time… At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker will play different sex positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to demonstrate to the actors what he wanted to do.. And let me tell you, this movie absolutely kills

I just watched one of the best movies of the year. The Athens festival nights have begun, and we were lucky enough to catch Anora at the opening ceremony. From the very first scene, you are glued to the screen and that feeling just doesn’t let up. As the movie went on, I kept thinking, “Come on, it has to slow down at some point, right? Give us a breather." No, no breaks, no falls, not even a hint of slowing down.

The lead actress, Mikey Madison, who plays Anora, is an absolute revelation

Anora has one of the best steps I’ve ever experienced in a movie. Anora, a sex worker and tough girl from Brooklyn, meets the son of a Russian oligarch and, in a whirlwind of madness, marries him. But her fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare when word reaches Russia, and his parents do everything in their power to annul their marriage. She effortlessly combines sexiness, femininity, childlike innocence and toughness in a way that leaves you speechless. She will go very, very far and don’t be surprised if you see her nominated for an Oscar.

He’s the most fun thing I’ve seen in a long time

Personally, I’d also give a Best Supporting Actor nomination to Mark Eidelshtein, who plays the Russian son. Fantastic. Anora is a punch in the face of the traditional fairy tale concept. It is a modern Cinderella story that is realistic, violent, cruel, funny and ultimately sweet. Only, in the real world, no prince will come to your rescue – you’ve got to pick up the pieces yourself and hold your head up…
