Remember the (internet) hype that Snakes on a Plane caused in 2006?

Synopsis

An exotic animal transforms into a monster and poses a deadly threat to all passengers. It was a huge success simply because the title was so on-point and because the movie delivered exactly what it promised. 18 years later, writer/director Ezra Tsegaye still thinks it was a brilliant idea to steal the idea!

Of course, Monster on a Plane will never create a hype

It probably won’t even be seen by many people, but one thing is for sure: it is a lot of fun to watch under the right circumstances. Make no mistake, Monster on a Plane is a terribly bad movie! But it is a FUN bad movie, and sometimes horror fans can actually enjoy it.

Oh wait, there’s an original gimmick!

There is nothing remotely original about the movie. The concept is stolen from « Snakes on a Plane » – duh – while the monster looks exactly like the design in « Critters », and its infrared vision is borrowed from « Predator ». The monster’s flatulence is a sophisticated attack mechanism that makes people hallucinate.

While gory, the digital effects are abysmal and the complete opposite of disturbing

Awesome! An irresponsible scientist smuggles it aboard a chartered flight to Berlin, it escapes during some turbulence and, naturally, goes on a bloody killing spree. « Monster on a Plane » is a German production, but filmed entirely in English, and the language skills and accents of the entire cast are hilariously atrocious.

Thankfully, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously. The performances, the in-jokes (like casting a pilot who looks like Peter Graves in « Airplane! »), the creature’s evolution into a sort of giant carnivorous plant…
